Thomas Ebbesen has been nominated to the Presidential Science Council that advises President Macron on science policy, emerging disciplines, national strategy and priorities. This council was established in December 2023 and he is one of 14 members covering many academic disciplines.

Our latest paper, presenting results obtained in collaboration with two other groups from ISIS (Joseph Moran‘s group and Giulio Raggazon‘s group) has just been accepted in Angewandte Chemie. Fabry-Perot optical cavities were developed to characterize Vibrational Strong Coupling (VSC) by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and we demonstrate that the London dispersion-driven conformational equilibrium of a molecular balance is altered when the C–H stretching vibration is strongly coupled to the cavity. Unexpectedly, VSC does not substantially affect molecular electron density distributions which has profound implications for the possible mechanisms at play in polaritonic chemistry.
Savoir(s), the journal of Strasbourg University, published in its last edition an article about the <Q|TT|S> (Quantum Think Tank Strasbourg), co-created by Giovanni Manfredi, Paul-Antoine Hervieux and Cyriaque Genet. The first event organized in ISIS was a success and we are looking forward to attending the next one !

With a bit of delay, here is the traditional “Women’s day” group picture of women working in ISIS, where three members of our team are present, together with Jean-Marie Lehn and ISIS new director, Jean-François Lutz.

Note that in the same line, we will receive on March 15 a group of high school students in our lab, in the framework of the event “Sciences, un métier de femmes“, to promote scientific professions among young women.
Since 10 days now, we have a new member in the team, Giovanni Mormina, who is currently taking the courses of the master Condensed Matter and Nanophysics in Strasbourg. Before coming in Alsace, he completed his education at the University of Bordeaux and his previous internships at the Laboratoire d’Ondes et Matière d’Aquitaine.
He is now starting a four-month internship at ISIS on stochastic thermodynamics and will work under the direction of Cyriaque Genet. Welcome to him !
We had a small celebration last Tuesday for the 70th birthday of Thomas Ebbesen, kindly organized by the members of the Fondation Jean-Marie Lehn. Thanks again for their welcome !

The first symposium of the Quantum Think Tank Strasbourg <Q|TT|S>, entitled
Les Imaginaires en Physique Quantique
will take place on February 5, from 2 to 5 pm, in ISIS conference room. The two speakers, Marc-Olivier Renou and Frédéric Patras will discuss (in french !) about the role and meaning of imaginary and complex numbers in physics. The defense went super well and we congratulate Dr. Dr. Pires, here below with his phD defense jury. Many thanks to the external members for their participation and the inspiring talks they gave during the minisymposium the day before.
December is placed under the sign of Brasil in the lab this year, maybe because we miss the sun and the heat, and after the visits of Felipe A. Pinheiro and of Paulo Maia Neto, we are happy to announce the phD defense of Luis Pires.
His work, entitled Entropic costs for brownian protocols was carried out under the supervision of Dr Cyriaque Genet. The defense will take place in ISIS conference room at 9am, on Thursday 14th of December.
On this occasion, a minisymposium about Thermodynamics of fluctuating systems is organized, same place, on Wednesday 13th, 2.30pm, gathering Sabine Klapp (TU Berlin), Paulo Maia Neto (UFRJ Rio de Janeiro), Yann Louyer (LOMA, Bordeaux) and Loïc Rondin (LuMIn, Paris-Saclay).
